Originally sculpted by renowned artist Cyrus E. Dallin in 1908, Appeal to the Great Spirit depicts a Plains Indian atop a horse, inspired by the artist’s upbringing around native tribes in Utah. A replica was commissioned for installation in Muncie by Bertha C. Ball in memory of her husband Edmund B. Ball in 1929. The statue is often mistakenly—though lovingly—referred to as the mythical “Chief Munsee” and has been been used as a symbol of the city for nearly 100 years.

Along the landscaped spiral are 23 signs containing images and text about events and themes significantly related to the history of Muncie, Indiana and the surrounding area. The entrance to the pathway begins with signage about Muncie’s most recent history. As one travels along the spiral, visitors and signage will “spiral back in time” until one reaches the center of the spiral, where there is a gathering space with seating and a shade structure, as well as signage relating to the history of Heekin Park and the importance of the spiral design.
