In the wake of his home country facing bankruptcy, Mirko Zeta, the Pontevedrian ambassador, hosts a ball where he and his fellow countrymen work to find a husband for Hanna Glawari, a rich widow, in order to keep her money within their principality. As the party unfolds, rumors of secret relationships and misunderstandings abound leaving Mirko and his guests wondering just how the night will end.
