Walking Tour of Downtown

If your ideal day includes coffee stops, local shopping, cute photo ops, and discovering places you immediately text your friends about, downtown Muncie should be on your list. We decided to spend the day exploring the heart of our hometown. Here’s a deeper look at the places we visited, what we loved, and why you should check it out for yourself.

You can also watch our tour!

One of our first stops downtown was the Historic Rose Court building on East Charles Street. Walking into Rose Court, you’re immediately greeted by yellow walls, plants everywhere, little benches to sit on, and a collection of small businesses hidden throughout the space. It feels both artsy and cozy.

Among these small businesses you will find Record Parlor of Muncie, a shop where it’s impossible not to start flipping through something. Records, CDs, and cassettes fill the shelves, inviting you to take a trip through different eras. Even if you don’t collect vinyl, there’ssomething fun about browsing albums you grew up with alongside artists you’ve never heard of. One thing we also loved was seeing local artwork featured throughout the shop. It made the space feel personal.

One of the boutiques we stopped into during our downtown walk was The Jaunty Lady on South Walnut Street, and it was like walking straight into a real-life cottagecore Pinterest board. The shop has a whimsical, cozy charm that immediately makes you want to look through every rack.

What makes the business different from a typical boutique is the focus on sustainable, slow fashion. Instead of selling trendy or mass-produced clothes, The Jaunty Lady focuses on thoughtful styles you can wear for years.

One thing that stood out was the embroidery work. The Jaunty Lady specializes in custom embroidery, which adds another layer of personality to the store and service for customers.

We had the pleasure of also exploring downtown’s newest addition, Pink Noise. This thrifted boutique is located inside the beautiful Historic Rose Court Building on East Charles Street. Shop tees, jeans, blouses, jewelry, and more. They are open Wednesday through Friday.

Walking into Aw Yeah Comics on East Charles Street will make you feel like a kid again! Every wall is packed with comics, graphic novels, collectibles, and pop culture finds. Whether you grew up reading “Batman” and “Spider-Man,” love anime and manga, or have recently fallen into fandoms like “Invincible,” there’s something here that’ll catch your attention.

What makes the shop especially fun is how easy it is to browse, even if you’re not a hardcore comic collector. One minute you’re casually flipping through colorful covers, and the next you’re spotting characters you forgot you loved or finding a series you suddenly need to start reading. There’s also a steady flow of new arrivals each week.

Another stop on our walk was Cornerstone Center for the Arts on East Main Street. It’s a place a lot of people recognize but that still has a few surprises inside. Did you know Cornerstone hosts free movie nights every month on Wednesdays at the Public Domain Theatre?

The upcoming lineup includes “The Passion of Joan of Arc,” “Dear Cupid,” and “The Adventures of Prince Achmed,” a variety of films that make the series feel more unique than your typical movie night. It makes for a fun midweek outing when you’re looking for something different to do downtown.

Beyond the cinema, Cornerstone Center for the Arts always seems to have something going on. With art programming, fitness classes, performances, and community events, the building is always buzzing!

Bring May flowers! Our downtown walk wouldn’t be complete without stopping into both Dandelions Flowers & Gifts on South Walnut Street and Normandy Flower Shop on West Charles Street.

While they specialize in floral design for weddings, events, and special occasions, the shops have both curated a meaningful everyday customer experience, even for those on the hunt for a quick bouquet. Normandy’s and Dandelions’ arrangements are both natural and colorful, which fits the organic energy of their shops.

Normandy has seasonal items you can’t help but add to your wish list. Dandelions’ shelves are filled with mugs, cards, soaps, notebooks, kitchen items, home décor, and all kinds of thoughtful little finds. Both shops are perfect for picking up a bouquet and a meaningful extra gift at the same time, especially with many of the items being locally inspired or locally made.

The second you walk through the door at Kat’s Crystals & Curiosities on East Adams Street you feel like you’ve stepped into a completely different world. There’s something to look at in every direction — crystals, candles, incense, tarot cards, jewelry, herbs, artwork, books, and other little curiosities tucked onto shelves.

What stands out most is how welcoming the space feels, especially if you’re someone who doesn’t know much about crystals or the metaphysical side of things. Kat, the owner, has created a shop where you can browse without feeling intimidated. There are even cards throughout the store explaining the meanings behind different stones, which makes wandering around fun

During our stop, there was a tarot card reading happening in one corner and Kat’s dog casually hanging around.

If supporting local creators matters to you, then you are in good company here. There are handmade wind chimes and sun catchers along with prints, jewelry, and other artwork. And if you’re into surprises, they also offer limited time mystery boxes packed with things like crystals, journals, stickers, soaps, keychains, and other fun finds.

Of course, we had to make a pit stop to refuel at The Caffeinery at Charles and Walnut streets.

There’s always something going on here with people catching up, others working, and drinks being called out at the counter. The staff is friendly, and if you go more than once, there’s a good chance they’ll remember your order.

Right now, they’ve got their spring menu out, which is half the fun of stopping in. Drinks like a banana cream pie latte, a Dubai chocolate latte, and a lavender cupcake latte make it easy to try something a little different than your usual.

Inside, it’s warm and relaxed with plants, couches, and plenty of spots to sit for a bit. They also just hit 12 years downtown, which says a lot about how many people keep coming back.

Muncie Civic Theatre on East Main Street is one of those places that feels bigger than life.

During our visit, they were running “Hello, Dolly!” — a classic musical full of big laughs and lively dance numbers. Even if you don’t consider yourself a “theater person,” their shows make for an easy and fun night out with family or friends.

Civic is located in the historic Boyce Block, which lends historic charm and character. Everything you see on stage is brought to life by local talent, from behind-the-scenes production to the heartfelt performances under the bright lights.

Their next production is “Frozen: The Broadway Musical,” running June 5–28, which is based on the popular Disney film, perfect for families.

Playing doesn’t have an age limit, and that’s what makes walking into Toys Forever Models & Hobbies on South Walnut Street feel welcoming for everyone.

If you’re looking for a hands-on activity, they have model and craft flower kits. If you’re looking for something social, they have an array of popular board games and card games for a night with friends. Even the novelty items and remote-control cars and aircraft add to that mix.

We also stopped into Hoosier Made, inside the iconic yellow Patterson Building on South Walnut Street.

The space is filled with products made by Indiana artisans and small businesses, and the inventory is always rotating. What stands out most is how easy it is to find gift ideas. There are soaps, candles, jewelry, pottery, kitchen items, pins, home décor pieces, and so much more.

You can tell each item came from someone creating something of their own, which makes it interesting even if you’re just walking through.

We swung by Downtown Nutrition at their new location on North Mulberry Street, which quickly turned into us standing at the counter debating which drink sounded the best among all the amazing flavors. They offer fun new drinks each month alongside their regular menu. For May, they’ve got things like a peach bellini Protini, banana bread loaded coffee, peanut butter Twix shake, and a Lilac Dream tea. They have everything from healthy shakes to sugar-free energizing teas and hydration drinks. If you need a quick pick-me-up while exploring downtown, this is definitely a spot we highly recommend!
